Kerbside Bin FAQs

When will my bin be collected?

  • Enter your address here to find out what day your bin is collected.

Where do I put my bin for collection?

  • Your bins should be placed on the kerb outside your property, a minimum of 30cm apart by 7am on collection day.  Please ensure your bin is an approved NAWMA collection bin, not overweight (80kg maximum) and contains the correct items. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in your bin not being collected.

How many bins can I have?

  • Each rateable property in the City of Playford, Salisbury and Town of Gawler is entitled to:
    • 1x 140 litre general waste (red-lid) bin
    • 1x 240 litre recycling (yellow-lid) bin
    • 1×140 litre or 240 litre food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (green-lid)*
  • Additional bins are available with a fee payable.

*City of Salisbury residents can place out two FOGO bins for collection each fortnight, free of charge.

How do I request additional bins?

  • If the standard kerbside bin allocation is not enough for your household, you can pay for an additional bin. For more information and to order, visit Bookings and Requests.

  • If your bin has been damaged (e.g., wheels fallen off, lid broken), you can request a free bin repair.  Complete the form here or call our Customer Experience Team on 8259 2100.

Why was my bin stickered/ not collected?

  • A red ‘Non-collection Notice’ sticker means the collection truck driver was not able to empty your bin due to one of the following problems:
    • The bin weighed more than 80kg
    • The bin was packed too tightly and would not empty
    • The bin was overfull (and emptying it would have caused spills onto the road)
    • The bin was contaminated (contained unacceptable items)
    • The bin was facing the wrong direction to be emptied
    • The bin was not on the kerb or was obstructed by a vehicle
    • The bin was not an approved NAWMA bin or was an unregistered additional bin
  • For further information, please contact the NAWMA Customer Experience Team on 8259 2100.

How long can I leave my bin out on the kerb?

  • Your kerbside bin should be out no earlier than 5pm the night before the scheduled collection day and brought back onto your property within 24 hours of being emptied.

How do I stop my food and garden organics bin (FOGO bin) smelling?

  • the contents of your green bin will naturally start to smell as they decompose, but there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the odour.
    • Store your bin in a shady spot.
    • Make sure there are no cracks in the bin and keep the lid closed.
    • Put a layer of cardboard, pizza boxes, newspaper, shredded paper, or dry leaves in the bottom of the bin to absorb liquid.
    • Put dry lawn clippings and dry garden clippings in the bin.
    • Wrap pet poo in newspaper or use a compostable bag.
    • Put your smelly food scraps in the freezer until bin night.
    • Clean your bin with hot soapy water or turn upside down and place on top of a garden sprinkler.
    • Sprinkle baking soda, vinegar or lemon juice into the bin after it has been emptied.
    • Use some citronella or tea tree oil on the top of your bin as a natural insect deterrent.

Is there a limit to how heavy my bin can be?

  • Kerbside bins cannot be emptied if they weight 80kg or more
