Garden Waste

We can learn a lot from nature, especially when it comes to putting goodness back into the soil.

Nature wastes little. Fallen leaves, dying plants, fallen fruit and flowers are worked upon by millions of bacteria and enzymes to help them decompose and naturally fertilise the soil. Eventually even broken twigs and branches will be reduced to supplement the soil and nurture new plant life.

This is recycling at its best.

Nature, of course, has its limitations in terms of recycling. This includes being able to cope with the abundance of plants that flourish in our urban gardens.

NAWMA’s garden waste collection service helps Nature’s course because the material is composted and the natural goodness is returned to the soil to help plants grow and maintain a healthy environment.

The garden waste service presently removes around 8.9 kg of organic material from each participating household in the region each week. This results in a diversion of more than 13,200 tonnes of garden waste from landfill each year.

You may elect to purchase a new 240 litre wheelie bin for garden waste. A second hand bin may also be used.

NAWMA provides garden waste collection on the alternate week to recycling collection. Please ring the freecall number 1800 111 004 of 8252 9666 for more details.

All garden waste bins must be registered with NAWMA. After registering, you will receive a large yellow sticker, which should be placed on either the lid of the bin or the front panel. A collection driver will not empty a garden waste bin unless the sticker is prominently located on the lid.

The garden waste collection is for prunings (not greater than 100mm in diameter), grass clippings, weeds, leaves and flowers. The waste should be as free of soil as possible.

Contaminants such as plastics and tins should not be placed in the bin as they render the garden waste unsuitable for recycling. Do not use bin liners or put garden waste in plastic bags.
